When Nicole emailed me with dire news I had to share it right away. Here’s her letter:

I’m an avid reader of your parents’ blog – and yours is pretty fun too! My husband and I are the proud parents of two crazy kitties and we’re currently searching for a dog to add to our family. The point of this story is that we’ve been shelter searching for quite a bit and stumbled across this story. We live too far away to help these poor dogs out, but I thought that if you put it on your blog and let people know about it, maybe some readers in Oregon would be able to help! Thanks!- Nicole

If those photos don’t make you want to take home one of those strays with buckets of love to give, I don’t know what will. And if you can’t personally take one in, why not forward this story to a few friends in need of a furry companion- especially if they’re in the Oregon area! Power to the people! Save the strays!

When Kathy told me about a major greyhound emergency I couldn’t wait to spread the word in the hopes of finding a good home for all 500 of the pooches in need. Here’s her letter:

I was just reading on the internet today that Dairyland Greyhound Racetrack in Kenosha, Wisconsin will be closing on December 31, 2009. Over 500 Greyhounds need to be adopted or they will be euthanized!! Here is an article on the subject. Please help get the word out; there are only a few weeks to get this done! For anyone interested they can call Joanne Kehoe at 312.559.0887 or the Dairyland Race Track Adoption Center at 262.612.8256. Thanks! -Kathy L.

If that doesn’t make you want to take home one of those stunningly beautiful dogs, I don’t know what will. And if you can’t personally take one in, why not forward this story to a few friends in need of a furry companion? If we keep spreading the word those 500 pups will be snatched up before you can say “gorgeous greyhound.” Power to the people! Save the pooches!

Update: Good news! I’ve just learned (from here) that the euthanization rumor is not true (whew!) and none of these dogs will be put down. Instead they could be sent to another race track, passed along to other shelters or put up for adoption until they find a home. Of course I love that last option best… don’t all dogs deserve a warm and loving home for the holidays?! And here’s another article that definitely encourages people to step up and help these dogs. Let’s keep spreading the word to get these pups a bona fide family for Christmas!

When Shelly dropped me a line about a pretty little pooch in need I couldn’t wait to spread the word in hopes of finding Gigi a fabulous family to snuggle up to. Here’s Shelly’s letter:

I’m writing because we need your help. I work with PAWS Rescue of Northern Virginia and our little Gigi really needs a home. Gigi is a 5-6 month old American Bulldog mix. She came to us completely emaciated and we helped her pull through but she didn’t completely heal. Gigi contracted distemper and it caused her to lose almost all muscle control in her body. She’s made great strides though- she can walk around now and even plays a bit. She loves attention and is happy to curl up on your lap. While she has really progressed, she has a ways to go. Gigi will most likely never regain control of her bladder. She knows exactly what to do, but most of the time she can’t quite make it. Gigi loves her crate and gets along beautifully with her foster brothers and sisters. Nothing would make her happier than to find a forever home of her own. If you can help Gigi by giving her a loving home please contact PAWS Rescue at info@pawsrescueva.org. You can also visit our website at www.pawsrescueva.org to view all our available dogs. Thanks Burger for your attention and love to animals everywhere! – Shelly

Isn’t Gigi a looker? She definitely sounds like the perfect pal for someone out there, so spread the word and let us know if you or someone you know might be the peanut butter to her jelly. Let’s find the lovely Gigi a home!

Update: It is with a heavy heart (sniffle) that I share the news that Gigi recently took a turn for the worse and after a long spirited battle she passed away on December 4th. But although I’m all choked up about it I do know that she’s in a better place. All dogs go to heaven, right? And I hear that all the squirrels there are easy to catch and there are treats around every turn. I’ll miss you Gigi!

Now don’t get me wrong, I am not particularly fond of cats (they are super fun to chase) but it’s not like I wish them any harm. So when I got this letter from Mara I had to share it in hopes of saving this cute (there, I said it) kitty’s life.

I’m writing to you because there’s a cat named Laine that desperately needs help. I know you’ve posted about shelter dogs so far, but I thought maybe you could help a kitty too? I volunteer at a non profit, no kill shelter in Hampton, VA. We’re completely volunteer and donation-run and in June we adopted Laine to a family. Laine is an FIV positive so she has to be in a home with no other cats, only FIV positive cats or with a dog. The family that adopted her only had a dog but they called our president this morning to say they could not keep her (the husband has allergies). Since we can’t take her back into Cat Corner (the risk to infect the other 80+ cats is too high) she will have to be euthanized on November 23rd if we can’t find her a foster or a forever home. Laine is only 2 years old and is a beautiful steel gray tux. She is very friendly & affectionate. I know you have a big following, and maybe, just maybe there will be someone in the Hampton Roads/Norfolk/VA Beach area that can take Laine in for a little while? Maybe even for good? You can see her page including photos right here. Thanks! – Mara

See, do you blame me? She sounds like a nice enough girl. And I definitely don’t want her to die! Someone save her! Her address and contact info is: The Cat Corner, Inc., 85 Fulton Street, Hampton, VA 23663, (757) 722-0590 and you can send any email inquiries to: TheCatCornerInc@verizon.net

Come on people! Let’s help a kitty out. They would do the same for us pooches, right? Right? Well, maybe…

Update: Good news! Since posting this info a very kind human has come forward and offered to foster Laine! Great work guys! Thanks so much for helping me spread the word.

When Mary wrote to me (even though she’s a human) I just had to share her letter. Everyone knows I get teary eyed just thinking about dogs in need, and she was reaching out to spread the word about some very special four-leggers in need of a happy home. I just love playing pooch & person matchmaker. Anyway, here’s her letter:

My pups and I love reading your blog (and your mom and dad’s blog) and we wanted to let you know about some dogs in need in the VA area! We live in Northern Virginia and foster dogs with HART (Homeless Animal Rescue Team) and they got in over 30 dogs from a puppy mill this week and need lots of help to find them homes. Some are young (Cockers, Jack Russell Terriers, Bulldogs, etc) and some are older and are very scared. Check out their website here. In addition to these puppy mill dogs, HART took in their normal number from high kill shelters in the area. The more dogs that are adopted this week, the more we can save next week! Here are the details on our adoption events this weekend:

Saturday – 12-3 – Greenbriar Petco in Chantilly, VA

Saturday – 12-3 – Burke Petco in Burke, VA

Check out these pictures too! They’re definitely cute. Thanks! -Mary

They most certainly are cute! Hey ladies, I’ll share my treats with you anytime…

Let’s get these Virginia dogs adopted. Go give your parents those big saucer eyes I talked about here. Save the pooches!

I just heard the saddest news. A no-kill shelter in Texas caught on fire last Saturday and over 100 dogs and cats died. I’m beside myself with grief. Here’s an article about it. Sniffle.

But there is something we can do. Spread the word that the Centex Humane Society needs help. Here’s what they’re requesting:

Volunteers in Killeen, Texas who can come lend a hand as they clean things out

Cleaning supplies like garbage bags, tarps, paper towels, HE detergent, etc

Gift cards to Lowe’s, Home Depot, Pet Smart, Petco, Office Max, Office Depot, Staples

Lunch and refreshments for the volunteers

People to help with repainting on the week of the 8th

Materials for a sprinkler system and a fire alarm that covers the whole building and connects to 911

And of course you can provide all those things by making a donation (as little as $5!) right here and if you would like to send them a check you can make it out to “The Centex Humane Society” and send it here: Centex Humane Society, 5501 Clear Creek Rd., Killeen, TX 76549. They’re also hosting some pretty great fundraisers which you can read more about right here. Let’s save the pooches! Ok, and the kitty cats too.

Update: Wahooo! I just learned that my post helped them raise $5000 to rebuild their shelter! Here’s a link all about it. So glad you guys are helping me spread the word and save pets everywhere!

Here’s something all of us dogs can do to help other pups find a home. Just give mom and dad the big lonely saucer eyes and will them to adopt someone for you to play with (feel free to use Jedi mind tricks in addition to the wide-eyed glare). For reference, I’ve included a photo of my technique below:

Another method that works fairly frequently is the look-so-cute-your-parents’-friends-and-relatives-can’t-resist-you, which helps them catch puppy fever and decide to save a pooch who needs a home (whatever you do, don’t pee on the floor as this has the opposite effect).

Of course you’ll want to help your parents select someone that you’ll get along with for the long haul (nothing’s more annoying than the wrong brother or sister coming in and ruining your life) but there really isn’t anything more rewarding than helping out a fellow four-legger in need. Here’s one of my favorite places to find pooches in need of rescuing/adoption in your area. And of course there’s always the ASPCA or the SPCA. Happy hunting…

Psst- Do you know of a specific shelter that’s about to put down pooches or a specific dog (or group of dogs) who desperately need to be adopted? Email me the details and I’ll share them right here in the hopes of spreading the word and saving the pooches!

Camp Wolfgang is trying desperately to find homes for their pooches before it's too late- let's spread the word and save those pups!

When I started Hamburger’s House I knew I wanted to use it to share photos of my handsome mug and gain fame and fortune beyond my wildest dreams. But I also wanted to use my powers for good and hopefully help some fellow four-leggers out there in the world when I can. And it appears as if spreading this info just might accomplish that goal so here it goes:

Camp Wolfgang, a reputable German Shepherd Rescue in Ennis, Texas, is closing down because of financial issues on October 31, 2009. They have nearly 200 adoptable dogs, who are healthy, friendly, vetted, spayed/neutered, micro-chipped, and well cared for. Many have had training. All dogs must be placed prior to October 31 (they don’t want to euthanize dogs who remain after October 31, but it appears this will be their only option).

Somebody help them! I’m getting all teary eyed over here.

They’re asking rescue organizations to take any dogs that they can (for free) and any individuals who are willing to adopt or foster to pay a $75 fee. They currently have approximately 120 PB German Shepherds, 2 Akitas, 1 Anatolian/Great Pyrenees, 4 Purebred Rottweilers, 1 Great Dane/Lab, 1 Boxer/Mastiff, 1 St. Bernard/Akita, and 45 other mixed breeds. Time is of the essence! If you know anyone who can adopt, accept a dog into their rescue, or help in any way, call Neisha Livengood at this number: 214-755-1627.

Thanks so much for spreading the word about this guys (both humans and pups alike). Here’s hoping we can pass this along and hopefully save those pups! Anyone in the Dallas area who might just take one home?

UPDATE: Oh happy day! It appears that all of the remaining dogs have been adopted or rescued! Whew. And don’t tell anybody I cried, ok?

Psst- Thanks for all the amazing entries to my little Bachelor competition yesterday. Can you believe I received over 100 submissions? I can. Anyway, now I have to sort through them and pick some semi-finalists. It’s a tough job but somebody’s gotta do it. Stay tuned to see which pups I pick this coming week…
