Save my people- er, my dogs!
When more than one of my adoring readers (I assume they’re adoring because they email me nice letters and suggest that my parents give me lots of treats) sent over emails about saving Chihuahuas in California, I had to spread the word! These guys and gals need a warm and loving home- and obviously Chihuahuas make amazing, wonderful companions because I’m the apple of my parents eye. Or is it eyes? Plural? I don’t know, I’m a dog. Anyway, here’s the gist:
California shelters are overrun with chihuahuas. According to this article from CBS news, “there are so many Chihuahuas at shelters in Oakland, they have started shipping the dogs out of state, said Megan Webb, director of Oakland Animal Services. Chihuahuas make up 30 percent or more of the dog populations at many California shelters. And experts say pop culture is to blame, with fans imitating Chihuahua-toting celebrities like Paris Hilton and Miley Cyrus, then abandoning the dogs. One of these California shelters’ biggest problems is a lack of money to fly the dogs to other states.”

So if you live in CA, why not take home a buddy? And if you don’t, why not pay a visit to the west coast and come home with a new fur baby? It’s a flawless plan. And don’t forget to tell your friends, your neighbors, and your neighbors’ dogs (who in turn will give their parents “the look” to guilt them into bringing home a little brother or sister for them). After all, everyone loves a Chihuahua. Right? Right.

So sad indeed! I think bad chi owners gave us a bad name! We’re an excellent little breed (smart, easy to house train, friendly with kids and grown ups alike, small enough to qualify as a carry-on when flying, etc). It definitely helps that my mom and dad got me into obedience classes, but I don’t even so much as chew on socks or scrach up the sofa. I’m a catch- really I am!
My husband and I adopted our fabulous Chi-mix, Olive (who thinks Burger is H-O-T-T, but didn’t want to break the heart of her Tervuren boyfriend by applying to be a bachelorette), from the Oakland shelter two years ago. Someone had left her in the drop box like an overdue library book! She is the most wonderful, sweet, smart little thing, and we can’t imagine how anyone could have dumped her, but we’re so happy she is with us now. Big thanks from Olive for all the Big B’s efforts to help out her homies still in the shelters!
Poor girl! I’m relieved to hear that you gave sweet Olive a happy home. Who could just leave her like that? The nerve! It makes the fur on the back of my neck stand on end.
The LA times blog just had an article about this too….

Thanks for looking out for those in need Burger!

Do you think she reads your blog??!?!
Woohoo, go Izzie! if she doesn’t read my blog I think she certainly should. I have so much to say about this crazy world that we live in.
Hello! I saw that story and this online too – The Flying Chihuahuas! http://www.projectflyingchihuahuas.com/
Way to go chi-lovers and Virgin Airlines too! I’m sure this will be a very happy holiday for all the chihuahuas and their new families ;)

Brian just told me last night that he heard there are a ton of Chihuahua’s here in Denver-Metro too. I guess after that Beverly Hills Chihuahua movie came out a lot of families got the dog and it just wasn’t always a good personality match with kids so they gave them to shelters. So sad!
