Work Your Parents Like A Pooch Pro
Here’s something all of us dogs can do to help other pups find a home. Just give mom and dad the big lonely saucer eyes and will them to adopt someone for you to play with (feel free to use Jedi mind tricks in addition to the wide-eyed glare). For reference, I’ve included a photo of my technique below:

Another method that works fairly frequently is the look-so-cute-your-parents’-friends-and-relatives-can’t-resist-you, which helps them catch puppy fever and decide to save a pooch who needs a home (whatever you do, don’t pee on the floor as this has the opposite effect).

Of course you’ll want to help your parents select someone that you’ll get along with for the long haul (nothing’s more annoying than the wrong brother or sister coming in and ruining your life) but there really isn’t anything more rewarding than helping out a fellow four-legger in need. Here’s one of my favorite places to find pooches in need of rescuing/adoption in your area. And of course there’s always the ASPCA or the SPCA. Happy hunting…
Psst- Do you know of a specific shelter that’s about to put down pooches or a specific dog (or group of dogs) who desperately need to be adopted? Email me the details and I’ll share them right here in the hopes of spreading the word and saving the pooches!

Burger, check out the link I attached. My parents bought their home a few weeks ago from this guy, and they just found out last night that they missed the free-puppy-with-purchase offer. Now they’re debating whether to get me a brother or sister. I just hope they don’t choose tattoo. That would be embarrassing. My fur would just cover it up anyway!
Does this mean you’re expecting to get a canine sibling in the near future??
PS: I told Juno that she made it into the semifinals for your doggy Bachelor, and she was so excited she made eye contact with me for an entire second. Right now she’s practicing getting comfortable curled up in her dog bed in the living room while we’re watching TV in the evenings, instead of by herself in the kitchen. She’s a little nervous about trick-or-treat night tonight. How do you like trick-or-treat night? Do you help hand out candy with Sherry and John?
Oh yes, I am a master at this…mom and dad have been planning for months to get me a brother or sister first thing when we get our own house *hopefully* next year!!! : ) Something about needing a playmate before they have babies whatever that means. Oh and I LOVE OTHER DOGS so maybe they think I’ll burn off some of my boxer energy with a friend!
Bella
Hurray! Thanks so much for recomending rescuing a shelter dog instead of going to a breeder. My boyfriend and I just rescued a shelter dog, a boxer/dachshund mix and he is the cutest, sweetest thing in the world (sorry Burger).
For people who want a specific breed to be sure of a puppy’s temperament when they grow up there are more specific dog rescue societies like the French Bulldog rescue http://www.frenchbulldogrescue.org/ that focus on rescuing purebreds and specific dogs. But isn’t it more fun to take your chances with a mixed breed? :)
Hey Adrienne,
And as far as I know there’s no brother or sister in the cards for me just yet, but I do work hard on all my aunts and uncles whenever they come over so they’ll consider taking on a four-legged companion for me to play with…
These are such cute pictures! Our pup Lola (herself a rescue) also loves to burrow under the covers…we sometimes think she might be a Cocker Spaniel/mole mix.
Hey Meredith KA,
I do like to hand out candy (although my parents usually humiliate me by making me answer the door in costume). Stay tuned for the pics of this year’s colossal embarrassment tomorrow…

Emily brought up dogs with mole genes and it reminded me of my growing concern about my “mole” proclivity. Albeit unrelated to this conversation, my parents are pretty sure that my “mole” is a big ole wart. It’s right above my mouth, just like Cindy Crawford. I try to tell them it’s a beauty mark, but it’s getting bigger and bigger! They keep humiliating me with all those mole jokes from Austin Powers. I just hope they find a cure… I realize this is not a medical help blog, but if you’ve ever had a wart, Burger, I’d love any advice!
Hmm, no warts yet but I do have two little moles with whiskers coming out of them (one on each cheek). But I agree that they’re more beauty mark than mole. I’m like the male Cindy Crawford over here.
Right on, Loren. Even those who lean toward purebred snobbery (or have other reasons, like allergies, for wanting a specific breed) can still do the right thing and find a breed-specific rescue. I was looking for a sister for my pooch (a MinPin mix) recently and found a great MinPin rescue (www.minpinrescue.org), from whence came the most adorable little girl doggy I could have asked for. Hurrah!
I love hearing about dogs who find a home! Whether they’re purebred or mangy little mutts it just warms my small Mexican heart. Some of the best dogs out there are rescues. So much love to give!
SOOO CUTE!! (snoopy doesn’t get to see this post..mommma can’t afford another fur-baby right now and those looks would definitly work!)
Aww man, I (Barley Dogg – with 2 Gs) gave my parents the eyes for months and then, a few weeks ago the ‘rents went to the SPCA and brought home a little girl puppy named Jezebel. I love playing with her and cuddling her, but boy-oh-boy do I get embarrassed when she pees in the house! Sometimes younger siblings are SO embarrassing! (My mom blogs about us bunches and thinks its cute to take pictures of us together – here: http://homeinthecountry.wordpress.com/category/jezebel/)
So, Burger, I totally think you should keep rocking those eyes… I bet they’ll work sooner or later! :)

Thanks, Burger, for using your stardom to help your fellow pups! Yeah for rescue/shelter dogs (I have two myself). They’re the BEST. Save a furry life today, all you Burger fans :o}~
